I am extremely grateful to MaMaStation for giving me an opportunity to share my thoughts and experiences of being a mother to Jonah, 5 and Hannah, 7.
Motherhood is an incredible journey where every day is a unique experience. Some days may be more difficult than others but the rewards greatly outweigh the challenges.
The kids love reading so much, they often have reading sessions with their stuffed animals.
I would like to start my inaugural blog with something very dear to my heart – Reading. My children love to read and be read to. It has been something that I have done with them since the day they were born and we still have reading rituals every night before bedtime. I recently counted the children’s books on my kids’ bookshelf and realized that we own more than 700 books. So I recruited my children to sort the books to donate to charity.
Winnie Young with Hannah and Jonah
We were flipping through the books, trying to decide which ones to give away but it was next to impossible because each book held a story and a memory for us. Whiledeciding on a book, my daughter, Hannah, said “Mommy, remember this book? Jonah ripped the corner of the page when he was a baby and I cried all day”. Then,Jonah found a board book and asked “Mommy, I remember that you gave this book to me when I was two years old. Can we read it tonight? This time, I’ll read it to you”.
As we were sorting, we often stopped to read a book out loud and talk about the memories associated with it. This process reminded me of the role books played inour lives. Now, not only do my children look to books when they have nothing else to do but have developed into good, fluent readers.
One of our earliest books that we decided to keep
In the end we took about two hours but were able to give away almost 200 books to charity. Now, we have room to add to our collection! And hopefully, our books can bring joy to other children as they have brought joy to my own children.
